The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) employ a normalization process to ensure fairness in the RRB Junior Engineer (JE) CBT-1 exam, which is conducted in multiple shifts. This process adjusts raw scores across different shifts to account for potential variations in difficulty levels.

RRB JE CBT -1 & CBT-2 Normalization Methodology

  • Percentile Scores:

    • RRBs utilize percentile scores for normalization.
    • A percentile score reflects the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below a particular raw score within the same shift.
    • The highest scorer in each shift receives a percentile score of 100.
    • Percentile scores are used instead of raw scores to create the merit list.
  • Calculation of Percentile Score:

    • Percentile Score = (Number of candidates in the shift with raw scores equal to or less than the candidate's raw score / Total number of candidates in the shift) * 100
  • RRB Scores:

    • Percentile scores from all shifts are merged to create RRB Scores.
    • RRB Scores are used to determine the final merit list.
  • Tie-breaking:

    • If two or more candidates have the same percentile score, age is the primary tie-breaker.
    • In case of equal age, alphabetical order of names is used.
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks:

    • Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifying marks (UT-40%, EWS-40%, OBC-30%, SC-30%, ST-25% or ST-30% for Level-1) are considered for the merit list.

RRB JE Exam: Calculation of Normalized Marks

  • Base Shift:

The "Base Shift" is the shift with the highest average score among all shifts, provided it has at least 70% of the average candidate count across all shifts.

  • Interpolation Formula:

    • For candidates with percentile scores greater than or equal to the minimum percentile of the Base Shift:
      • N = ((X2 - X1) / (Y2 - Y1)) * (X - X1) + Y1
      • Where:
        • N = Normalized Marks
        • X2 = Immediate higher Percentile Score in Base Shift
        • X1 = Immediate lower Percentile Score in Base Shift
        • Y2 = Marks corresponding to X2 Percentile Score
        • Y1 = Marks corresponding to X1 Percentile Score
    • For candidates with percentile scores less than the minimum percentile of the Base Shift:
      • N = Y1 - ((X2 - X1) / (Y2 - Y1)) * (X1 - X)
      • Where:
        • N = Normalized Marks
        • X1 = Immediate higher Percentile Score in Base Shift
        • X2 = Immediate next higher Percentile Score in Base Shift
        • Y1 = Marks corresponding to X1 Percentile Score
        • Y2 = Marks corresponding to X2 Percentile Score

Important Notes:

  • Always refer to the official RRB websites for the latest updates on the recruitment process.
  • Beware of fraudulent sources and individuals who may attempt to mislead candidates.
